With funding from the National Science Foundation, OMSI opened Clever Together, a 1,500 sq. ft. bilingual (English/Spanish) permanent exhibition designed to help visitors develop and practice the skills needed to make more sustainable decisions in their everyday lives. The exhibition was created in partnership with local government organizations and non-profits and focuses on people and places in and around Portland.
Collaborate with local organizations to create an exhibition that celebrates sustainability and reframes environmental decisions as positive, everyday acts. Additionally, use best practices to fabricate sustainable exhibits.
The OMSI exhibit team worked together to develop a Green Exhibit Checklist and other resources for green exhibit design. The design of Clever Together applied best practices for sustainable exhibits, including building beautiful components out of scrap lumber and recycled materials. Throughout the project, the team made innovative strides with new green materials and methods and collaborated with a large team of volunteers.
Clever Together was developed for Spanish and English speaking audiences. In addition to bilingual exhibit labels, the exhibition features people, stories, objects and images relevant to both audiences. The exhibition takes a positive approach to the topic of sustainability and reinforces decision-making skills in fun interactives that connect to everyday life in Portland.
The project developed a Green Exhibit Checklist and other web-based resources for museums at exhibitseed.org. Team members also delivered Exhibit SEED workshops to hundreds of museum professionals at partner sites and national conferences around the country. This work has solidified OMSI’s leadership in the field of sustainable exhibit development.
